James Joyce · 1914 · Short stories
Fifteen short stories set in early twentieth-century Dublin, each a masterpiece of compression and indirection. Joyce intended it as a moral history of his city; by the time it was published, after nine years and numerous rejections, it had become something larger. The final story, "The Dead," is one of the greatest short works in the English language.
