The science

Eye-tracking research shows readers follow an F-pattern when scanning — two horizontal sweeps across the top, then progressively shorter scans down the left side (Nielsen & Pernice, 2010). Perceptual span research (Rayner, 1998) shows skilled readers extract meaning from 14–15 characters per fixation. Diagonal reading is triage, not reading

Diagonal reading moves the eye down and across a page rather than along every line, sampling structure and content words instead of full prose. Its job is to tell you what a document contains and whether it deserves a proper read.

It is worth being honest about the trade-off. You are not reading faster with the same comprehension; you are deliberately trading comprehension for coverage. Research on skimming consistently finds recall falls as rate rises. That is a fair price for deciding which of forty search results to open, and a bad one for the paper your essay depends on.

How the pass actually works

Read the title, abstract and conclusion first — in most academic writing those carry the claim. Then take the diagonal pass through the body, letting your eye land on the opening of each paragraph, on numerals, proper nouns and anything typographically marked. Topic sentences do most of the work: in competently written prose the first sentence tells you what the paragraph is for.

The trainer paces that movement so you stop sub-vocalising and stop regressing — the two habits that drag skimming back down to ordinary reading speed. Expect it to feel uncomfortable and incomplete. That is the technique working, not failing.

Where to use it, and where not to

Use it for literature searches, deciding what to read properly, revisiting something you have already read, and getting the shape of a long report before committing to it.

Do not use it for dense argument, mathematics, anything you will be examined on in detail, legal or technical text where one qualifier changes the meaning, or fiction — where the prose is the point rather than a delivery mechanism for facts.
