Modal verbs (may, might, could), epistemic verbs (suggests, indicates, appears), and frequency adverbs (generally, typically, largely) are all hedging tools. Academics use hedging because most research claims are probabilistic rather than absolute, and because hedging signals intellectual integrity — the writer understands the limits of their evidence.
