Anne of Green Gables has been in continuous print since 1908. It has sold over 50 million copies. Canada declared Anne Shirley an honorary citizen. The novel is so identified with Prince Edward Island that it has become the basis of the island's tourism industry.
None of this fully explains why the book is so persistently loved, which is a more interesting question.

What Anne of Green Gables Is About
Matthew Cuthbert, a shy farmer on Prince Edward Island, and his stern sister Marilla intend to adopt an orphan boy to help with farm work. A mistake at the orphanage sends them Anne Shirley — eleven years old, red-haired, freckled, talkative to a degree that unnerves Matthew immediately, and possessed of an imagination so active that she names ponds, trees, and road-corners and becomes genuinely attached to them.
The novel follows Anne's first years at Green Gables. She makes a best friend (Diana Barry), a fierce rival turned eventual love interest (Gilbert Blythe), an enemy (the teacher she accidentally insults), and a hundred smaller relationships with the Avonlea community. She makes spectacular mistakes — dyeing her hair green, accidentally getting Diana drunk, losing her temper with the woman who criticises her appearance — and apologises for them with complete sincerity and no diminishment of the quality that caused them.
What Montgomery is doing, across 38 chapters, is demonstrating that Anne's unconventional qualities — her imagination, her verbosity, her intensity — are not problems to be solved. They are what makes her valuable.

Reading Strategy
Chapter by chapter — each chapter is a self-contained episode in Anne's developing year. This makes it ideal for reading one or two chapters per evening over a week.
Montgomery's descriptions of Prince Edward Island — some readers skim the nature descriptions; they are actually among the best things in the book. Montgomery had lived on PEI her entire life and the descriptions are precise and deeply felt.
Use warpread's RSVP mode at 300–350 WPM — Anne's dialogue is worth reading at full attention; Montgomery gives her a distinctive, slightly theatrical voice that carries the character. The narrative sections between dialogue can be read faster.
Chapter 38 — "The Bend in the Road" — contains the novel's emotional resolution. Read it slowly.

What is Anne of Green Gables about?
Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a bachelor and his sister in Prince Edward Island, Canada, request an orphan boy to help with farm work. They receive Anne Shirley, a red-headed girl of eleven, by mistake. The novel follows Anne's first years at Green Gables — her imaginative excesses, her friendships, her fierce intelligence, her rivalry with Gilbert Blythe, and her gradual becoming of exactly the person she was always going to be.
Why is Anne of Green Gables so beloved?
Anne Shirley is one of the most vividly individual heroines in children's literature — talkative, imaginative, dramatic, and deeply intelligent. The novel validates her unconventional qualities rather than disciplining them away. Anne's combination of fierce self-belief and genuine warmth, set against Montgomery's precise and lyrical descriptions of Prince Edward Island, creates a reading experience that readers return to repeatedly across their lives.
Is Anne of Green Gables just for children?
Anne of Green Gables was published for children but has always been read equally by adults. The novel's portrait of an intelligent, unconventional girl finding her place in a community that initially doesn't know what to do with her is genuinely affecting at any age. Many adult readers return to it during difficult periods and find it holds up — or improves.
How many Anne books are there?
L.M. Montgomery wrote eight Anne books: Anne of Green Gables (1908), Anne of Avonlea (1909), Anne of the Island (1915), Anne of Windy Poplars (1936), Anne's House of Dreams (1917), Anne of Ingleside (1939), Rainbow Valley (1919), and Rilla of Ingleside (1921). The first book is complete in itself; the series extends Anne's story through adulthood and into World War I.
