When writers are asked what the greatest novel ever written is, the answers cluster around two titles: Anna Karenina and Don Quixote. Faulkner said Tolstoy; Kafka said Cervantes. The Nobel Prize committee, given the choice, has repeatedly come down on the side of novelists who cited Don Quixote as their foundational text.

What Don Quixote Is About
Alonso Quixano has read too many chivalric romances. His mind has gone. He decides he is a knight-errant named Don Quixote de la Mancha. He recruits a local peasant, Sancho Panza, as his squire. They set out across La Mancha to have adventures and right wrongs.
The adventures consistently fail. The giants are windmills. The princess is an innkeeper's daughter. The enchanted army is a flock of sheep. Don Quixote insists on the romantic interpretation; Sancho provides a running commentary of baffled, practical realism. The comedy comes from the gap between their perspectives.
But Cervantes is not simply mocking Don Quixote. As the novel progresses — especially in Part 2 — the satire becomes something more complicated. Don Quixote's idealism, ridiculous as it is, produces genuine nobility. Sancho's realism, sensible as it is, produces pettiness. The question of which of them is right becomes genuinely difficult.

Reading Strategy for Don Quixote
The episodic structure is your friend — Don Quixote is built from self-contained adventures, not a single plot arc. Each episode — the windmills, the inn, the sheep, the galley slaves — is largely self-contained. This makes it ideal for reading one episode per session.
Part 1 vs Part 2:
- Part 1 (Chapters 1–52): The parody phase. Largely episodic. The comedy is broad. Read at pace — warpread's RSVP mode at 350–400 WPM works well here.
- Part 2 (Chapters 1–74): The metafictional phase. Don Quixote meets people who have read Part 1. The comedy deepens into something more melancholy. Read more carefully.
The interpolated stories — Cervantes inserts several complete short stories into Part 1 (the 'Captive's Tale,' the 'Story of the Curious Impertinent'). They are beautiful but slow the main narrative. On a first read, you can skim the interpolated stories and return to them later.
Sancho Panza — pay as much attention to Sancho as to Don Quixote. His development across 130 chapters is one of the great character arcs in world literature. He arrives as a comic prop; he leaves as the novel's moral centre.
